I want to share with you 4 common mistakes parents make all too often with potty training. I am hoping to give you insight on how to look for the signs of making these mistakes and avoid them at all cost!
1. Not Being Prepared. When making the decision to potty train you must understand that there is groundwork that has to be laid prior to the training. Once you start to notice signs they may be interested (see previous blog post to see the main signs of readiness) you must start preparing! Think of what a monumental task you are asking your child to do. The more you prepare, the easier the training will be! With beam, you will receive step by step instructions on how to be fully prepared before the first day of training!
2. Too High Expectations on Day 1. You have to know that Day 1 of the training process is not pretty. It is FILLED with mistakes and accidents. However, through these mistakes will come the successes! You cannot think that your child will automatically get it and start having success from the get go. For some it comes much quicker than others. Having an unrealistic expectation of your child on Day 1 often times leads to failure on the parents part, and they will give up. With beam, you will receive full, unlimited support and I will be able to navigate you through these mistakes and we will find those successes and celebrate together!
3. Not Being Patient. I think that this is the most crucial aspect of potty training. You absolutely must be patient! Potty training is not for the faint of heart and it will drive you insane if you let it! You must remain calm, redirecting and encouraging your child. Celebrate them and do not let them see your frustration! They need to be praised over and over again. With beam, I will be able to help relieve your frustrations by talking through situations that may arise. I can provide you will realtime support and suggestions completely tailored for your child at the exact moment you need! So don't get frustrated, just be patient and you will see the success come much sooner!
4. Not Being Consistent. This is such a huge part of the training. You have to be consistent, providing a routine and atmosphere that is stable and the same for a few days. Will this mean that you have to make sacrifices on your end with scheduling etc? Absolutely. You need to make sure you have time in your schedule to make this commitment. Look at it in the grand scheme of things, a few days buckling down and it will benefit you in so many ways, all in less than a week! Yes, it may be challenging to rearrange some things. However, once it clicks, it just clicks and you will soon be able to resume your schedule and normal everyday life!
I tell you these common mistakes to let you know that if you choose beam, I will make sure that these mistakes are not made and that together we will reach the goal of a potty training success!
